Sports – The Perfect Business

Name an industry that gets free advertising every day in every newspaper around the country? Still thinking? Here is another hint – they have web sites, radio shows, TV shows and entire cable channels dedicated to talking about them and their product? Give Up? The answer is sports.

What an incredible industry. Every morning Jerry Jones’ team has articles written about it. Free color pictures on the front page promoting his brand. Radio shows talking solely about his product for hours on end.

More than 30 million people play fantasy sports. The average player in fantasy sports spends about $110 a year on their fantasy teams, and that is mainly to have “bragging rights”. Some of us can remember back in the 1990′s when people played “rotisserie leagues”. Today ESPN, Yahoo, Sports Illustrated, CBS Sportsline and others have very sophisticated online systems to manage leagues and get you information about your team, players and league standings.

They make a fortune on these sites from advertising because they know they have a market of 18 – 50 year old males earning over $50,000 a year and who spend more than two hours a week playing these games, reading the ads, and messaging their friends about the sports articles. Why are fantasy sports games so popular -because we love sports and the fantasy games feed the love.

In 2004, the CBS and Fox networks spent a combined $8 billion to broadcast NFL games for six years. In 1999 CBS spent $6 billion for the rights to broadcast the NCAA basketball tournament for 11 years. In 2006 Fox and TBS signed a combined $3 billion deal with MLB to broadcast a few games a week plus the post season. In 2001, the NBA signed a six year $3.4 Billion deal with Time Warner. Why are billions of dollars being spent to broadcast sporting events? Because we love sports they are making money on filling that love.

You get the idea. Sports are part of our lives. We have an insatiable appetite for sports. We emotionally connect to players and teams. They are our role models. Entire cities shut down when a championship game is being played or for the victory parade. Corporations invest millions and billions of dollars in sports related media because they can get a return on that investment.

Sports Marketing – Tiger Woods, Lebron James, Michael Jordan and countless others are not only great talents, but they are the stars of carefully crafted marketing plans. These marketing plans are geared towards raising their profile, creating interest in the fan base and expanding that fan base. This does not happen just because Tiger is a good guy. This happens because there are millions of dollars to be made. Thousands of hours are invested into these marketing plans – creating the images, the right words, the right message and the right media outlet.

There is a greater point here – the business of sports has successfully tapped into our emotions and our lives in a way no other business has.

Marketing 101 – When we have read the countless books on selling and marketing, we learned the best way to sell to a person is to tap into that person’s emotions. The ability to create and emotional attachment from the buyer to your product is priceless. Everyone remember the tire ad where the baby was sitting inside the tire giggling and looking cute. You’re not buying white-walled radials – you are buying protection for your children. No price is too steep for that.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could create this type of emotion that for a furniture store? Imagine radio shows talking about trundle beds, recliner sofas and nesting tables. Well it’s hard to get excited about china cabinets the same way we do about football – and we never will. The only things that tap into our minds like sports is politics and religion. Those will too quickly become controversial for the entrepreneur.

Fundraising Sales Representatives Enjoy Flexible Careers

Are you looking for a flexible career that allows you to set your own hours and work out of your home?

Fundraising sales representatives enjoy just this type of career. Although it does involve selling fundraising products and services, it is not your typical sales representative career.

Many people become fundraising reps after years of volunteer fundraising experience. People who have developed contacts in their community and know how to motivate volunteers and run a successful fundraising campaign are just the type of people that fundraising companies are looking for.

Stay-at-home moms, school teachers, and retirees often have the experience needed and make ideal fundraising reps. As a matter of fact, if you have been a volunteer fundraiser for any length of time you may find yourself being recruited by a national fundraising company.

What does a fundraising rep do?

Fundraising reps usually work on a commission basis. As an independent representative you’ll call upon schools, clubs, churches, teams, and other nonprofit organzations to present the progam and products that your company offers. These products can be anything from magazines, cookie dough, and wrapping paper to art auctions.

During the fundraiser you’ll be in charge of working with the nonprofit group in every way to help them carry out it out. Members of the nonprofit organization will rely on you to help them kick-off their campaign, collect the money and make sure the products are delivered.

You will need flexible hours because many times you will be working evenings and weekends. You will receive a commission based upon the amount of products that are sold. The better job you do at helping the nonprofit organization sell their products the more money you will earn. You may work with the same organizations year after year and you can build up quite a substantial income after a few years as a rep.

What equipment will you need as a fundraising rep?

Like any other home-based business you will need to set up an offce. Usually your clients will not be coming to your office so you can have it anywhere in your home. You’ll need the basic equipment such as a desk, computer, printer, fax, telephone, file cabinets and office supplies.

You will also need space to store your presentation supplies and samples. You will also, of course, need reliable transporation and a cell phone.

What kind of person makes a good fundraising rep?

Some of the qualities needed to be a successful fundraising rep are: good organizational skills, leadership and team building skills, self-confidence and the ability to make oral presentations in front of a large audience, ability to handle money and legal contracts, and self motivation to run your own business.

Save Money With Online Insurance

Insurance is a binding contract between two parties stating what one party will do to repair, replace, or protect, the property of the other party. Everybody that drives a vehicle needs one of these contracts. People buy these contracts to protect their investment in their homes, and they even buy some contracts that agree to provide cash to their loved ones when they die.

Some types of insurance policies are mandatory. When you finance the purchase of a major purchase like a house, a car, or a boat, then the finance company will require you to have a policy to protect their interest in the property. With these policies in place the person that financed the property will not lose money if the property becomes damaged by an accident or act of nature.

When a policy is mandatory people often feel trapped and they purchase the first policy they are offered, without comparing the quote to others. Mostly they do this because time is money, and it takes time to get a bunch of quotes. This is the main reason why people save money with online insurance.

Online insurance is offered by many different companies. Some of these companies are the major name companies you already use, and some are companies that are especially designed to provide this service over the internet. Each company that has a web site online will have a way for you to enter the information about the type of policy you want, and the information describing your property, and then receive a price quote.

These policies will meet the regulations set by your financial institution, and by the laws of your state. The best part of online insurance is the fact that you can get the different quotes so quickly. Being capable of knowing the price of the policy in a few minutes, means that people can compare the prices of a lot of companies, and find the one company that has the lowest rates for the policy they want.

You can not only save money with online insurance by doing the price comparison, you can also save money when you pay your bill online at some of these companies. Some of the companies will offer you a discount if you pay your bill electronically. This is because paying electronically means less paperwork and expense for the company. They will simply email you your bill and you can go online to pay or in most cases have an arrangement for a automatic payment to be made from your credit card.

Why You Need Unemployment Insurance

As the economy struggles to find its way to recovery after the recession, we are faced with an uncertain future for both the public and the private sector. Each week the newspapers seem to be telling us about the latest batch of job losses and the rising unemployment figures. In this worrying climate, it is more vital than ever that you find the best income protection insurance, especially if you have a family to look after.

However, finding a trustworthy and value-for-money provider can be a challenge. Not everyone in the market is reputable, and many insurers will ask for your contact details when you request a quote and then flood you with sales calls and emails trying to sell you products you neither want nor need.

The most reliable providers – those who know they have good, competitive products to offer – will not feel the need to resort to such aggressive marketing techniques, and will often offer you an instant quote online, meaning you save time and do not need to give up all your contact details.

A good place to start looking for unemployment insurance providers is on comparison websites. These will give you an unbiased, free comparison of prices for similar insurance packages across the industry. However, they are not so good at separating the reputable insurers from the disreputable ones, so proceed with caution when you find a provider who seems to promise the earth. The truth behind the claims may not always be as good as you hoped.

Another thing which may hinder your search is that income protection does not always go by the same name. Some call it unemployment insurance, while others call it lifestyle protection or redundancy cover, so make sure you do not waste time researching the wrong product. You simply need a policy which will cover your loss of income in the event of redundancy, illness or an accident.

There is no law requiring you to have income protection insurance, but it is really in your own interest to consider purchasing a policy, because it will at least provide a cushion to soften your fall if the worst should happen and you find yourself out of a job or unable to work, while still needing to provide for your loved ones.

If you don’t want to insure yourself, then it is highly recommended you have some other kind of safety net in place, such as a significant pot of family savings that you can dip into during times of dire need. Unfortunately, the statistics suggest that relatively few families have the luxury of large savings to fall back on, and many don’t have any insurance either.

We never know what is over the horizon, so don’t take the risk of being left with nothing in the event of redundancy. Bills take no account of your circumstances – they will still need to be paid regardless of whether you have lost your job or suffered some other misfortune.

With this in mind, it really does make sense to find yourself a good insurance policy sooner rather than later. Insurance companies are not charities, and the more your job appears in jeopardy, the more difficult and expensive it will be for you to get income protection cover for you and your family. Peterbilt Trucks: The Birth of a Legend

T.A. Peterman had an inner passion: trucks. Despite this fact there was a time when he felt that he couldnt find a truck of his liking and thats when he decided to build his own truck.

In 1939 he acquired the Fageol Truck and Coach Factory. Peterman wanted to have a place where he could modify old trucks at his will and this plant served his purpose. He began to envision the standard that he wanted for his trucks, with this concept in mind he built a truck with the best quality ever seen.

His design began to give him a reputation. He kept manufacturing trucks and branded them Peterbilt (name of a line of wooden doors that one of his companies manufactured).

During World War II, T.A. decided to pursue government contracts for heavy duty trucks instead of assembling combat vehicles. Unfortunately T.A. Peterman died from cancer after the War. Ida, his widow took care of his business affairs.

The direction of the company took a different turn in 1946 when five of the companys main employees and outside investors purchased Peterbilt Motors from Ida Peterman for $450 000.

L.A. Lundstrum was named President of Peterbilt Motors and their development continued; by 1947 their income surpassed $4 500 000 while trucks were manufactured on a daily basis.

Pacific Car and Foundry Company (PACCAR) acquired Peterbilt Motors in 1958 as an unincorporated division. The Credit Card Column

What Jobs Can a Knuckleboom Truck Handle?

A knuckleboom truck is a multi-functional piece of heavy-duty equipment. This is a truck with an articulated boom attached to the base behind the cab that resembles a human finger. The end of the boom can be modified to perform various tasks. These vehicles can perform many different jobs, depending on the attachment that is used: excavation, drilling holes, lifting, hauling and transferring of material, and forestry work.

  • Excavation – These trucks can do the work of a typical modern excavator. They can be configured to perform the job by attaching a general purpose bucket that can dig and break through the ground. Knuckleboom truck excavators are commonly used along with a pay loader and bulldozer. Regardless of the location, this equipment can be set up for a particular purpose to get work done that is usually performed by a back hoe and this work can be accomplished with efficiency and increased productivity.
  • Hole Drilling – To accomplish multiple tasks, these vehicles can also be modified into powerful machines that can drill holes. An auger drill can be attached at the end of the boom to perform the tasks of a typical digger derrick. When this equipment is configured into a digger derrick, it can rapidly bore holes and then relocate from one location to another, enhancing productivity and work efficiency.
  • Lifting, Hauling and Transferring of Material – Another important task of this type of vehicle is its capacity to lift, haul and transfer heavy material using the appropriate configuration. Modern technological advancement shows that this type of vehicle can load and unload heavy material on and off a transport vehicle and act like a standard crane. The versatility and efficiency of this monster machine is so advanced because of its increased payload, precise control, lower profile and ability to reach great distances. It is equipped with outriggers to maintain balance while lifting, hauling and transferring loads from one place to another.
  • Forestry Work – In the forest industry, this truck is used in the harvesting and cutting of trees into different lengths and sizes. For forest operations, it can also do tree felling, the removal of tree branches and bucking of trees. Examples of these types of vehicles that are used in forestry are the harvester and forwarder. The end of the knuckleboom arm can be attached with a hydraulically powered chain-saw to cut trees It can also be set up with two-feed rollers and curved de-limbing knives to cut branches.

Applying For a Job

Success happens not by chance, but because you were given a chance and took advantage of it.” – Kevin Geary

Knowing where and how to apply for a job is just as important as whether or not you’re qualified. Campus career centres are the best, even after you graduate. They’ve got connections with companies that recruit graduates and often have all the information you need. It’s advisable to speak to some of your professors and their colleagues who tend to be quite clued up. Of course, newspapers, websites, and recruitment agencies can be a great help too.

When applying to multiple jobs, it’s important to think of each one separately. That may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many people use the exact same materials for all submission. While some aspects (such as work experience) are always relevant, others need to be changed. Customisation is the key! It helps to keep track of all the applications you’ve completed and changes you’ve made (make sure you follow up to get confirmation), together with offline copies of everything you submit.

The same goes for the cover letter. This one-page introduction must be specifically tailored to the job, specifically addressed to whoever will be reading it (with their name and designation correct if you can find that out in advance), and specify the position you’re applying for (or a reference number if you have one).

Different companies want different things and so you should highlight only what is relevant to them is a must. You’ve got to match what you have to offer with what they want by explaining why you want to work in that particular area and how doing so will benefit you both. Research the company beforehand so you can mention something specific that makes you want to work there as opposed to somewhere else.

What’s really important in this day and age is to keep the tone formal even when submitting online. That means using a greeting, short sentences, simple words, and including your contact details at the end of each email (so the search for your number doesn’t turn into a scavenger hunt). It also means NO emoticons or using an email alias like sexyboy86. (Besides, I think it’s taken.)

Business Booming for Auto Repair Shops

While most industries are still struggling or are barely managing to maintain their foothold since the recession set in, one industrial segment is enjoying the benefits of a stalled economy. According to a December 2010 Reuters report, the “Sputtering economy puts auto repair firms in fast lane.”

If one stops to think about it, it makes perfect sense why business is booming for auto repair shops. Faced with higher unemployment and eliminated bonuses and raises, individuals are holding on to their vehicles instead of swapping in every couple of years when their lease runs out.

And with the age of the average American’s mode of transport creeping higher and higher-now estimated to be nearly 10 years-more repairs are in order. That tendency spells good news for mechanics and auto body technicians alike. As the news report puts it, “As consumers put off buying new cars, they create more repair and maintenance work for automotive repair companies.”

This upswing in car repair business does not play favorites either. Percentage wise, the mom-and-pop shops are seeing as many new customers as the mega auto repair corporations. And the good news keeps on coming for auto repairers. Reuters predicts that the “trend (of drivers patching and fixing their vehicles rather than buying new) should continue for a few years yet as a shaky economic recovery deters big-ticket buys.”

One industry expert anticipates that tendency toward repairing over replacement to last another two to five years, despite consumer spending rising 0.4 percent in October 2010. The recession hit a lot of people hard. Understandably, they’re reluctant to return to their old unfettered spending habits.

Are Auto Jobs Still Viable?

When you think about the auto industry and what kind of jobs are available, you probably picture working in an automobile manufacturing plant or in a car dealership. One area that you may not tend to think about being related to the auto industry is banking. Lending and banking jobs are a huge part of the auto industry. When you go in to purchase a new car or lease a car, one of the first things that you need to do is get approved for the loan used to purchase the car.

Lenders and bankers are the ones who ultimately decide whether or not you are going to be able to drive home in a new car or if you will leave the lot empty-handed. Banker jobs and auto jobs go hand-in-hand, because without the first, you cannot usually get the latter. So what is involved in the auto lending and leasing world? Well, lenders and bankers work closely with auto dealers to ensure that the proper steps are taken when they consider giving approval for a new loan. In some cases, larger auto dealerships have an in-house financing and lending service that you can use, while others work closely with local banks to close your loan.

The amount of loan that you are approved for and whether or not you actually get approved for the loan is decided by bankers and lenders; they base their decisions on a number of financial figures and tools. They analyze your credit, determine your cash flow analysis and check your employment and banking records to make sure that you are going to be able to afford the new car payments. Auto dealers rely on bankers to help them keep their business up and running and make as many sales as possible, while instilling confidence that the people can afford the loan.

Landscaping Around Your Mailbox

Aggregates can be fine or coarse. Fine aggregate is usually sand although other materials may be substituted. The ideal sand for concrete contains particles that vary uniformly in size from very fine grit up to 4 in. When landscaping around your mailbox the gradation from fine to coarse is important because the finer particles fill the spaces between the larger pieces.

Gravel, crushed stone, pebbles and slag are coarse aggregates that are a minimum of ¼ in. in size. As you can see, therefore, there is a constant gradation in aggregate size ranging from the very finest aggregates in the sand to the coarsest in the gravel. Larger sizes in coarse aggregate can go up.

The reasoning behind the gradation of particle size in both fine and coarse aggregates is as follows: If all particles were large, a cross section of the pour would resemble a wall of Ping-pong balls. If, on the other hand, the cross section included marbles, beads, buckshot and BBs in addition to Ping-pong balls, the smaller items would fill the spaces between the larger The cement paste, in addition to coating all the particles, would fill the most minute openings and the result would be a solid, dense mass with maximum strength.

After being taken from a natural source of supply, aggregates are screened, graded and mixed in proper proportion. Fine or coarse, all must be clean and free of all other matter. Any strange material in the mix (clay, loam, vegetable matter) will keep the cement paste from doing its job. If impurities are present the mix will be porous after hardening and have lower than standard strength values. The aggregates must be hard and durable for landscaping around your mailbox if the concrete is to be likewise. If they are soft, flaky or at all soluble, they won’t do a good job. The only exception is in lightweight concrete mixes where porous aggregates are used to minimize weight.

All the ingredients described may be purchased separately or already mixed. Buying separately in bulk may be a good idea when you have a variety of projects that require different types of mixes, but where the projects are general small walls, patio slabs, walks, etc. it’s a better idea to buy a “concrete mix”, specifying the largest size aggregate you wish to have. This will be delivered dry (probably a 1 yd. minimum load) but with the proper proportions of fine and coarse aggregates thoroughly mixed. You add the cement and water.

For small landscaping around your mailbox jobs you can buy ready-mix products in sack containers. Some of these are 90-pounders (a cubic foot), others 60-pounders. Mortar mixes, concrete mixes, grout, pointing mortar, sand, gravel, stone-all may be purchased this way. But this is not the easiest or the most economical way to buy large quantities. Where you have a big slab to pour or a long walk, it’s best to consider calling in a ready-mix truck. With this setup you get not only the aggregates, but the cement and water all thoroughly mixed and ready to pour when the truck arrives at the project site.

Disability Job and Career Management

A planted seed cannot grow without the nurturing power of sunlight and water. In the same way, employees cannot grow without the support of their organization. In our previous article, we explored a study conducted by the Federal Managers Association that had an alarming message: managers are perceived as ill equipped to foster a work environment where employees with disabilities can develop into valuable professionals.

Unemployment for individuals with disabilities has risen, despite the strong legislative push to abolish discriminatory hiring practices.[i] A clear reason for this contradictory outcome is a general lack of the proper disability education and advocacy among managers, an argument advanced by the Federal Manager Association’s Unnecessary Boundaries study.

Fortunately, the hardest hurdles have been cleared. The Federal government has led by example through the 1990s, starting with the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. President Clinton furthered efforts with his Executive Order 13163, a commitment to award 100,000 Federal jobs to persons with disabilities by 2005. Organizations are now responsible to follow suit, not only by equitable hiring practices, but also by establishing inclusive work environments where persons with disabilities receive the supports necessary to advance and grow.

The first and most essential step in providing support for an employee with a mental or physical impairment is to evaluate their level of competency. The mysterious and complex nature of mental illness coupled with a personalized manifestation per individual places extreme importance on the ability of management to assess employees and their varying abilities before attempting to create environmental supports to encourage their growth. A multitude of tools are available for gauging competency and can be classified by how they measure the abilities of an employee. Self-report instruments, for example, rely on the ability of the employee to display aptitude through written questionnaires or workplace simulations. Observer rating instruments, on the other hand, rely on an observer to rate the aptitude of an employee based on how well he or she displays an ability to perform specific tasks, either through written questionnaires or simulated work situations.
